Prices in this handbook are given in RenMinBi (RMB) and subsequently are accompanied by an equivalent in U.S. dollars for the convenience of students. For any changes in figures, please consult the newest university publication.
 
Tuition
 
Beginning on Jan. 1, 2004, Peking University changed tuition costs. The new tuition costs are applicable to students who entered the school after Jan. 1, 2004. Students who entered the school before that date are still held to the costs that were effective in 2003.

Rules for Payment of Tuition
   
  1. Those who study more than one an academic semester, but not a full year, should pay a year's full tuition. Those who study one academic semester or less should pay for half a year's tuition.
  2. International students should pay tuition promptly and in full. Upon arrival, new students should pay a full year's tuition. Upperclassmen may choose to pay tuition individually per semester.
  3. International students pursuing a degree who receive approval to graduate early must pay tuition according to the university's regulations.
  4. The deadline for paying tuition is the last day of registration.
  5. International students who are late in paying tuition must fill out an application at the Division for International Students office for approval. Once approved, students will have the following late fines:

10-30 days 830 RMB (or $100 US)
If tuition payment is more than 30 days late, the student will be expelled from the school.
     
Rules for Tuition Refund
   
  1. If permission is given for an international student to take a leave of absence, tuition for the period of absence will not be returned. It will be extended to the academic quarter in which the student returns to the school.
  2. Students who receive permission to leave the school or change student status, should follow the guidelines for leaving the school and apply for the following refunds:

  3. If new students desire to leave the school once they have registered, the tuition of the first semester will not be refunded.
  4. 10% of refunds are allocated to administrative procedures. This fee should be paid in either RMB or US dollars.
   
Other Related Expenses
   
  Fee for Extending Study: Graduate Students
   
  If graduate students are unable to graduate before the acceptable deadline, through approval they may extend their length of study. With permission, graduate students may receive a lower cost of tuition while they complete their studies.
    1. The standard cost for periods of extension is half of regular tuition.
    2. The procedure for applying to extend study: In the last month of the previous academic quarter, students must go to the Division for International Students office to apply for special extension period tuition. Only after acceptance of the application will the special extension period tuition be in effect.
    3. Conditions for extension period tuition (without completion of these conditions, the student is ineligible to receive extension period tuition):
    • Good registry record and leave of absence not exceeding 2 academic semesters.
    • Completion of required units.
    • Completion of required study terms
    4. Limit for extension period tuition: 2 yrs for M.A., 3 yrs for Ph.D.
    5. Students who pay extension period tuition are treated the same as other exchange students.
    6. Students who pay extension period tuition should live off-campus.
     
  Dissertation presentation Application Fee
   
  Graduate students who do not pass their Dissertation presentation may apply to defend their thesis again within a certain time limit. A second presentation will cost 5,810 RMB (or $700 US).
 
  Leave of Absence Registration Fee
   
  Students with permission to take a leave of absence must pay a leave of absence registration fee of $200 US for every quarter missed. This registration fee should be paid before the day of registration for the quarter to be missed.
   
  Fee for Extending Study: Undergraduates
 
  Undergraduate programs for international students are 4 years and may be extended up to 6 years. During the period of extension, if the student re-takes more than two classes in one quarter, he or she must pay the full tuition price. If the student re-takes one or two classes in one quarter, he or she can pay the extended study tuition price, which is 4,150 RMB (or $500 US).
   
  Fee for Re-Taking Undergraduate Classes

  Fee for Extended Study: Visiting and Research Students
   
  250 RMB (or $30 US)
   
Housing Expenses
   
International students living in Shao Yuan building should promptly pay for housing according to Shao Yuan guidelines. Failure to pay for housing will result in a late fee of 5% of the price in addition to the original price.
   
Students living off-campus should also promptly pay rent in order to avoid unnecessary trouble with the law.
