Insurance

As of Sept. 1, 2003, Peking University policy dictates that foreign students must have medical insurance. International students' medical insurance must at least include Accidental Injuries and Hospitalization. Students with government scholarship have medical insurance coverage; other students should buy insurance.

Students may buy medical insurance before coming to China or they may buy it upon arrival. When purchasing insurance, you should ask the insurance company in detail how to use your medical insurance and who to contact for medical services.

Students should present their proof of medical insurance to the university to prove that they have insurance that covers accidental injury and hospitalization services during the period of their study. This proof should be in Chinese or English.

Students who do not have medical insurance will not be able to register.

Medical Services

Peking University can provide good medical services at the university hospital or the Third Hospital. When you are feeling ill, bring your student ID to either of these hospitals for an appointment. The Peking University campus is also surrounded by hospitals: Haidian Hospital, Xiyuan Traditional Chinese Hospital, etc. and the city of Beijing is home to many other hospitals like Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Beijing Hospital, Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital, and Tongren Hospital. These are good, comprehensive hospitals; students should feel free to choose any of these major hospitals for medical attention.

On a side note, since all international students are required to have medical insurance, it is important for you to make sure that when you go to the hospital your visit and treatment will be covered by your insurance. In order to avoid problems, before you go to the hospital, contact your insurance company and ask if your insurance in Beijing will cover treatment of your illness and other specific questions like whether or not your insurance will cover the initial visit fee.

International students will pay for their medical care on a fee-for-service basis.

Library Services

The Peking University Library has a collection of over seven million books and is the largest library in Asia. Students are required to show their library cards at the entrance for security reasons.

The loan period for books is one month and loan renewal is available either in person at the library or through the library's website (http://www.lib.pku.edu.cn). Requests for material from the Chinese Historical Document Archive should be sent to the Office of International Student Affairs one month before the needed date.

Each department generally has a library as well and you are welcome to ask your department office about their library procedures.

Library Card

To apply for a library card, students need to bring their student ID and a passport-size photo to the Library Card Processing Office in the library. Processing fee and deposit will be charge for the library card. Students can return their library cards by the time of graduation and receive the deposit.

Once logged into the library website, you may request a hold, renew, or view the status of you're the checked out books for your account. You will need a user number or substitute user number to log-on. The number at the bottom of your library card is your user number. Your substitute user number is your student ID number. The initial password will be given to you when you receive your library card, but you may ask to change it.

If your library card is lost, please immediately apply for a new one.

Emergency/Security Services

Beijing is a relatively safe city and life on Peking University campus is particularly safe. There are 24-hour security guards stationed at each campus gate and at various locations on campus. Nevertheless, here are a few recommendations to ensure your safety:

It is advisable to take extra precaution with your passport and money. Normally, one should not carry their passport and large sums of cash on their person. Your student ID should be sufficient both on campus and anywhere in Beijing for identification and student verification. If you leave expensive items in your room, make sure to lock the door, shut off all the lights and faucet and close the windows.

Follow all traffic rules and be particularly cautious on the road.

In the case of emergency or other disturbances, promptly call the police and similarly report to the Division for International Students office, where the staff can be of assistance.

    Emergency Contact Phone Numbers:
  • Theft: 110
  • Fire: 119
  • Traffic Accident: 122
  • Medical Emergency: 112 or 999
  • Peking University Emergency Hotline: 6275-2119

These numbers you can dial for free from any phone (including public IC card and coin phones ~ no need to use an IC card or coins).

Housing

International students may live on campus in Shao Yuan dormitory. If international students extend their period of study, they will not be given housing in Shao Yuan. The standard dormitory rooms for international students are equipped with TV, telephone, internet access, a desk, a chair, a closet, and an electric fan. Two students will share a room, and students will share a communal bathroom and showers on each floor. Accommodation at this standard dorm room costs US $3.50 per person per day.

If you wish to live in other types of accommodations, you may send a special request for alternative housing at the time of new student registration, but PKU cannot guarantee the availability of other housing arrangements. International students on full scholarship will receive free housing for the duration of their study in Peking University. The free housing provided by PKU will be in Shao Yuan. The PKU scholarship will only cover the US $3.50 housing, and students will be responsible for the extra cost of alternative housing.

Other types of accommodations at Shao Yuan Dormitory are as follows:
  • Building 6: each person has a private room with carpeting, a small sitting room shared by three persons, a color TV set, internet access, a telephone, and a private bathroom/shower. US $8 per person per day.
  • Building 8: each person has a private room with carpeting, a small sitting room shared by two persons, a color TV set, internet access, a telephone, and a private bathroom/shower. US $11 per room per day.
  • Building 5: standard double room with carpeting, a color TV set, a telephone, internet access, a refrigerator, air conditioning, and a study room. US $28 per room per day.
  • Building 8: standard with internet access. US $38 per room per day.
  • Building 9: standard single room with color TV set, a telephone, internet access, a refrigerator, and air conditioning. US $20 per room per day.

Students may also live off-campus, but they must register with the local residence office. Remember when you are registering to make sure that your landlord is trustworthy and your rental procedure is completely legal.

Many students find that their address and contact information change while they are studying at Peking University. In this case, they should promptly report their new address, phone number and e-mail address to the Division for International Students because this office often sends out important notifications and when such situations arise, it is essential that their information database is updated. The Division for International Students office maintains a strict policy of privacy over individual's contact information.

Also, the Division for International Students provides information on off-campus housing. For such assistance, feel free to contact its staff.
