International Faculty Immerse in Smart Sports at PKU’s Khoo Teck Puat Gymnasium

On the afternoon of June 12, the "Smart Sports · Healthy Living" experiential tour, hosted by the Peking University International Faculty Center, was held at the Khoo Teck Puat Gymnasium. International faculty members from the China–Russia Mathematics Center, the School of Earth and Space Sciences, the School of Material Science and Engineering, and the Beijing International Center for Mathematical Research gathered to explore the university's advancements in smart sports through facility tours, table tennis interaction, and smart health experiences—relaxing both body and mind while fostering interdisciplinary connections.

The tour began with visits to key venues within the complex, including the fitness center, badminton and basketball courts, swimming pool, squash courts, and the bouldering wall of the renowned Mountain Eagle Society. Staff provided detailed briefings on facility configurations, opening hours, and the online booking system. As the official venue for table tennis during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the gymnasium's iconic long-span steel roof—designed around the concept of the "Chinese Ridge" and its legacy of Olympic glory left a deep impression on the participating scholars.

The group then moved to the Table Tennis Hall for a lighthearted session with China's "national sport." Guided by on-site volunteers, the scholars practiced basic grips and serves before engaging in friendly rallies. Faculty from diverse research fields connected through the universal language of sport, and the cross-departmental atmosphere was warm, lively, and collegial.

The highlight of the event was the visit to the Smart Health Station—an intelligent space integrating health assessment, physical analysis, and scientific fitness guidance. Scholars first experienced rapid health screenings using smart diagnostic devices, obtaining detailed metrics—including body fat percentage, heart rate variability, cardiopulmonary function, and skeletal muscle mass—within minutes. Personalized health reports and exercise prescriptions generated by the system gave everyone a clear, data-driven picture of their physical well-being.

In the subsequent smart fitness session, participants explored the synergy between technology and exercise. On the smart treadmills and incline trainers (climbing machines), they simulated outdoor running and mountain climbing, with real-time data on pace, elevation gain, and calorie burn making every movement precise and controllable. The rowing machines and spin bikes featured interactive competitive modes, transforming routine strength training into exhilarating, game-like challenges. A standout attraction was the ski simulator, which faithfully recreated the dynamics and visual rush of alpine skiing—letting participants feel the wind-in-the-hair thrill of winter sports without leaving the room. This "data-driven, scenario-based" fitness model, balancing scientific rigor with genuine fun, earned high praise from the international faculty.

The event not only offered a refreshing break for body and mind, but also built a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural bridge through the medium of smart sports.
