Peking University Summer School International

About the Program

 

Since opening its door in 2009, Peking University Summer School International (PKUSSI) has experienced burgeoning growth thanks to the dedication of PKU faculty and staff, as well as the participation of faculty and students from all over the world.

 

Aiming to provide international students with an accessible and high-quality platform to understand China, we tap into the brilliant pool of the university’s faculty, and its international network of experts, to develop and offer a portfolio of courses that include the humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary studies.

Influenced by the global situation of COVID-19 prevention and control, and in order to keep the teaching work is underway in an orderly manner, Peking University Summer School International program 2020 is to be put to online platforms. The primary goal of Peking University has always been to ensure the health and welfare of all staffs and students. We are committed to ensuring the safety, academic continuity and integrity while providing students with high-quality teaching.

Some courses from the original course list will be cancelled because teacher resources cannot be guaranteed. However, we have selected 8 courses to choose from, which are popular with students in previous years, and they are distributed in different subjects, such as Economics, Regional Studies, Environmental Studies, Humanities, Computer Sciences, etc. The certificate of attendance and authenticated official transcript will be provided by Peking University as well.

 

Eligibility

 

Applicants for the PKU Summer School International 2020 should fulfill the following requirements:

• Be between the ages of 18 and 40 (inclusive) and be in good health;

• Be currently attending college/university;

• Have proof of English proficiency (required of non-English native speaking students; TOEFL, GRE, or IELTS scores are preferred forms of proof).

Applicants must use the Online Application System to submit their applications and any other required information: www.oir.pku.edu.cn/summerschool.

 

Steps for the Online Application:

• Go to the online application page (www.studyatpku.com);

• Create an account;

• Log in and choose “Non-Degree Program Application”;

• Select “Short-term Program” – “Summer School International”;

• Start the online application and fill in all the required information;

• Submit the online application and pay the application fee;

* As a result of the switch to online courses, each applicant will receive a discount of RMB 2000 directly.

 

Notice

 

Students who have completed the online application and course selection process will receive a fee-payment notification. Students make complete the payment process within 5 days of receiving the notification. If payment is not received within the specific time period, the selected courses will automatically lapse, and students will have to choose their courses afresh. Once all courses have been selected and paid for, they cannot be withdrawn from or changed, or may any new courses be added. In occasional cases, specific courses may be cancelled due to minimum enrollment requirement, and affected students will be notified to choose an existing course in substitute of the cancelled course. Each student can choose courses up to 6 credits.

 

Refund Policy

Please inform the program office immediately if there are any changes to your application. If you wish to withdraw from the program for personal reasons, the following refund policy will be applied:

On and After June 29, 2020

 

If the course or program is cancelled for PKUSSI’s reasons, the applicant can get a full refund of tuition.

 

Refunds will be made in Chinese currency only. Refunds will be returned to the original payment account. Bank transaction fee may be occurred during the refunding process and shall be borne by the party who asked for the refund.

CHEN Kaihe

Professor, Peking University

PKUSSI Course: Media and Society in China

Dr. Chen is currently full professor of the School of Journalism and Communication, Peking University. He got his B.A., M.A. degrees from the School of International Studies at Peking University, and PhD from the University of Hong Kong. His teaching and research interests include China and World Journalism History, Media and International Relations, Globalization and Communication. He has written extensively and published articles on topics of journalism history, international relations and international communication, media and China’s foreign policy. He has completed research projects like Transnational Communication and International Relations, International Communication and China’s Foreign relations, International Communication and China’s Soft Power (all funded by China’s National Social Sciences Foundation), among others. Dr. Chen received Excellent Teacher of Peking University award in 2006, 2014 and 2016.

 

 

CHEN Shaofeng

Associate Professor, Peking University

PKUSSI Course: China in the Global Economy

Dr. CHEN Shaofeng is an Associate Professor of School of International Studies, Peking University. He received his Ph.D. from National University of Singapore (NUS) and his master degree from Renmin University of China. Before joining in PKU, he worked as a research official and visiting research fellow at the East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore. Currently he serves as an editorial board member of Korean Journal of Policy Science and Asia-Pacific Security Dialogue, respectively. He was a visiting professor at Hong Kong University in 2014 and New York University in 2015. His research interests cover energy security, regional cooperation and regional integration in the Asia Pacific, and global economic governance. He has published for more than 30 papers and book chapters, and his works appear in both English and Chinese journals, such as the China Quarterly, Journal of Current Chinese Affairs, China: An International Journal, Copenhagen Journal of Asian Studies, Policy and Society, Journal of Chinese Political Science, International Politics Quarterly, International Journal of China Studies, American Study, etc.

 

 

 

LIU Minquan

Professor, Peking University

PKUSSI Course: Introduction to Chinese Economy

Liu Minquan is Professor of the Department of Development Economics and the Founding Director of the Center for Human and Economic Development Studies (CHEDS), Peking University. Before he joined Peking University in 2005, he had been Professor of Economics at Hopkins-Nanjing Center, Johns Hopkins University, and a lecturer and research fellow with the University of Leicester and University of Cambridge. He was also a visitor to the Asian Development Bank Institute as Senior Research Fellow and Senior Capacity Building Specialist in 2011-1014, where he task-managed a project on disaster risk management (DRM) in Asia and the Pacific Region, following the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. His research interest has been wide, spanning human development (principally health, education and social protection) in China and other East and Southeast Asian Economies; a broad range of issues concerning China’s economic development strategy (rural institutions, rural financing and agricultural development; industrialization; foreign direct investment, poverty eradication; and the environment); and interpretations of the recent development history of China. He has led many important research projects on the above issues and his publications have addressed these and other subject matters, and have appeared in leading Chinese and international journals. He received an M.Phil from the University of Cambridge in 1984, and a D.Phil from the University of Oxford in 1990.

QIN Xuezheng

Vice Dean of School of Economics, Peking University

PKUSSI Course: Applied Econometrics

 

Xuezheng Qin is a professor and deputy dean in the School of Economics at Peking University, and the director of the Peking University Research Center for Market Economy. He earned his bachelor degree from Peking University (2002) and his Ph.D. in Economics from the State University of New York at Buffalo (2009). Dr. Qin’s primary research interests include health economics, economics of human capital, and applied econometrics. He has published more than 60 academic papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Comparative Economics, Health Economics, Health Policy and Planning, China Economic Review, Health Economics Policy and Law, and Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance. He is also the author of several books, including Principles of Economics (2014), Applied Econometrics with Eviews and SAS Examples (2016), and Migrant Workers in China’s New Health Insurance System (2017). His research is funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Education of China, the International Development Research Centre in Canada, and others. Dr. Qin was a guest editor of China Economic Review, Inquiry, Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, and he also serves on the editorial board of several academic journals and as an external reviewer for both the National Natural Science Foundation and National Social Science Foundation of China. He was elected as the president of China Labor Economist Forum, and has gained other recognitions. In Peking University, Dr. Qin teaches Econometrics, Health Economics and Chinese Economic Transition; his teaching has won national awards in China’s multimedia course competition.

 

 

XU Xin

Director, Cornell University

PKUSSI Course: The Rise of China and Change in World Politics

Dr. XU Xin is the Director of the China and Asia-Pacific Studies Program (CAPS) and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Government at Cornell University. He received his B.A. and M.A. in International Relations from Peking University and his Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University. He has been Associate Professor of International Relations in the Department of International Politics at Peking University, Associate Professor of Asia Pacific Studies and Asia-Pacific Studies Academic Field Leader (Sustainable Development & International Governance) at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan, a Visiting Research Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs, an International Fellow at the Charles F. Kettering Foundation in the United States, a Postdoctoral Fellow on National Security in the John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies at Harvard University, and a Visiting Research Fellow and Acting Director of the Princeton-Harvard China and the World Program at Princeton University. His current areas of interest include China’s grand strategy, the Taiwan issue, East Asian security politics, and Asian regionalism/multilateralism.

 

 

 

ZHAI Kun

Professor, Peking University

PKUSSI Course: China’s Original International Strategy: the Belt and Road Initiatives

Dr. ZHAI Kun is a full Professor in the School of International Studies, Peking University. He received his Bachelor and Master’s Degree from University of International Relations, and his Ph.D. from China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR). He was the visiting professor at School of Advanced International Studies at John Hopkins University and at the Atlantic Council (2001), and participated in the Global Youth Exchange Program hosted by Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (2003), Asia-Euro Youth Leader Forum in Hague Holland (2004), and the Sino-US Distinguished Youth Forum (2008). Before coming to PKU, he was appointed as the Director of Institute of Global Politics Studies (2011-2014), and the Director of Institute of South Asia, Southeast Asia and Oceanian Studies (2008-2011) at CICIR. His research areas include global, neighbouring and individual country studies (especially Southeast Asia and Oceanian region). He currently co-, And he holds many appointments such as Vice Chairman of China’s Association for Southeast Asia Studies, the distinguished member of the Chinese Expert Panel on ASEAN Regional Forum, Board Member of China Public Diplomacy Association, member of the Chinese Expert Panel Pan-Beibu Gulf (PBG) Economic Cooperation, Seinor Advisor of China-ASEAN Expo, etc.

 

 

ZHENG Mei

Professor, College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University

PKUSSI Course: Environmental Challenges and Sustainable Development in China

Professor Mei Zheng is from the College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University, Beijing, China. She is Boya Distinguished Professor of Peking University (2018 to present). Prof. Zheng received her Ph.D. in Oceanography from Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island in 2000 and worked at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Institute of Technology from 2000 to 2010. She joined the faculty of Peking University since 2010.

Prof. Zhengs research interests include urban air pollution, marine aerosol, sources of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and health impacts using chemical tracers and modeling tools. Before joining Peking University, she has rich experience by studying and working in different institutions including Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Rhode Island, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prof. Zheng is an environmental scientist, who has published about 120 SCI papers, with a total citation for more than 5000 times by researchers all over the world. She also actively serves in international organizations such as American Geophysical Union (AGU) meeting committee (2015-2018), and International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) scientific steering committee (2018-present).

Prof. Zheng has great interests in contributing to international exchange and teaching in Peking University. She has designed oversea summer course and led a total of about 30 undergraduate students of Peking University to study in Europe and the United States during summer for four years (an average of about 8 students each year). Prof. Zheng has also offered summer course Beijing-Copenhagen Urban Challengeto students from Copenhagen in 2015.
