University of the Republic of Uruguay Delegation Visits Peking University

On April 11, 2017, a delegation led by Mr. Robert Marcarian, President of the University of the Republic of Uruguay and Mr. Juan Fernando Lugris Rodriguez, Uruguay’s Ambassador to China, visited Peking University. Professor Li Yansong, Vice President of PKU, Li Shujing, Vice Dean of School of Foreign Languages, along with other PKU representatives received the guests.

Mr. Li Yansong firstly extended a warm welcome to the Uruguay Delegation, and he mentioned that although Peking University is collaborating more and more with Latin American universities, there is still much more room to develop. PKU has many international students from Latin America, and a large number of students who are interested in Latin American language and culture. PKU hopes to provide its students with opportunities to study the language as well as experience its culture.  
 
President Marcarian introduced that University of the Republic of Uruguay is the largest comprehensive university in the country, and that it has been endeavoring to strengthen its relations with others schools. In recent years, it especially stresses on cooperating with East Asian schools. The presidents of both countries signed agreements to deepen the collaboration. The University of the Republic of Uruguay is going to establish a branch of the Confucius Institute soon, and it welcomes scholars and teachers from Peking University. In summer this year, the Sino-Uruguay Joint Commission Conference on Science and Technology is going to be held in Uruguay. It is also welcoming PKU’s experts in related fields.

Mr. Fernando then mentioned that last year, a series of books concerning Uruguayan literature were donated to PKU. More recently, China’s Vice Minister of Culture visited Uruguay and signed memorandums on mutual cooperation. Uruguay hopes to further develop its friendship with China.
