The Opening Ceremony of Peking University's Seventh Summer School International

On July 8, 2015, the opening ceremony and student-faculty mixer for the 7th annual Peking University Summer School International (PKU:SSI) was help on campus at the Huxin Island in the center of Weiming Lake. Peking University's Vice President and Provost, Gao Song, Director of the Office of International Relations, Xia Hongwei, Deputy Director of the Office of Education Administration, Liu Jianbo, and more than 200 students and professors attended the opening ceremony and student-faculty mixer.

Mr. Gao started off the event with his opening remarks. He expressed that PKU:SSI was a valuable opportunity for international students to explore Chinese culture, and he explained that it was a good platform for cross-cultural exchanges and to further develop the internationalization of higher education.

Afterwards, Vice President Gao Song, Director Xia Hongwei, Deputy Director Liu Jianbo gave Professor Roger Thomas Ames from the University of Hawaii, Professor Xu Xin from Cornell University, and Professor Zhou Yu from Vassar College Summer School International visiting scholar appointment certificates, and then he thanked the professors for their important contributions to the PKU:SSI.

PKU:SSI Background Information:

The Summer School International program started in 2009 and has gradually become an important educational and cultural exchange platform for international and Chinese students at Peking University. This year, the program has opened 25 English-instructed courses in many different disciplines, including Chinese culture, history, philosophy, economics, politics, international relations, the environment, sports, and more. This year, there are 212 students from 25 countries and regions worldwide enrolled in the program. Students come from many prestigious institutions, including Yale University, the University of California, Oxford University, Cambridge University, University of Copenhagen, Berlin's Free University, the University of Amsterdam, National University of Singapore, and dozens of other well-known universities.
