AEARU 36th Board of Directors Meeting Convenes at PKU

On the morning of April 11, 2015, the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) 36th Board of Directors (BOD) Meeting was held successfully at the Yingjie Exchange Centre, Peking University (PKU). Twenty-seven BOD members were present, including three from PKU, three from Fudan University, one from the University of Tokyo, one from Osaka University, one from National Taiwan University, and one from Tsinghua University. Some outstanding scholors and experts also participated in the meeting to contribute to AEARU and the 3rd AEARU Symposium on the Culture of Chinese Characters.

The meeting began at half past nine with the chairperson of AEARU, Chen Jun, President of Nanjing University, and Lin Jianhua, President of PKU delivering addresses. President Lin noted that members of AEARU shared common academic and cultural backgrounds and shared responsibility for the development our nations and regions. He added that faced challenges from globalization and internationalization and that the establishment of AEARU was designed to meet new challenges of the era and to enhance higher education in East Asia. President Lin also mentioned that PKU has been a member of AEARU for many years and that PKU has witnessed AEARU’s remarkable development. A large group of students from PKU take part in activities of AEARU every year, and PKU is willing to make a greater contribution to the 36th AEARU BOD Meeting and the 3rd AEARU Symposium on the Culture of Chinese Characters.

During the meeting, a summary of activities that occurred from 2014 to 2015 was given and the planned activities of 2015 were described. Afterwards, Dr. Xia Hongwei, Dean of the Office of International Relations of PKU, gave a detailed introduction to PKU’s preparation for the AEARU Symposium on the Culture of Chinese Characters and the 2016 Student Summer Camp. Issues concerning recruiting new members and AEARU-LERU cooperation were also discussed.

The meeting was drawn to an end and then members interacted and took group photos.
