On the afternoon of March 26, 2015, the opening ceremony of Peking University’s National Model United Nations Conference for high school students 2015 was held at the Yingjie Overseas Exchange Center. Several important guests were invited to attend the ceremony, including Mr. Faisal Mohammad, the ambassador of Maldives, Yan Liang, the secretary-general of the United Nations Association of China, Wang Kai, the officer from the China People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Wang Yiming, deputy secretary of the CPC Peking University Committee, Wang Yizhou, deputy dean of the School of International Studies, and Lin Li, deputy dean of the Office of Admissions.
The theme for this year is “Motivate the Generation”, marking the achievement of the eight thousand development plan of the United Nations. There were more than five hundred high school students, more than a hundred spectators and volunteers from more than one hundred high schools around China participating in the conference. The ceremony was held at 2pm in the afternoon and the Director of Public Relations Li Tianjiao hosted the meeting.
After expressing thanks for attending to all the participants, guests and the press, the ambassador of Maldives Mr. Faisal Mohammad was invited to make the first speech. He said his presence at the conference was a pleasure and that it was a great platform for teenagers to learn more about international relations and globalization. There is a strong call for young people in China to contribute more and take more responsibility in the world. He went on to explain that Maldives is a small nation, and that the United Nations was established to give a platform for all countries to express themselves regardless of their strengths and sizes, and that it is important to communicate and cooperate with others, while mutual understanding and diversity are also significant.
Yan Liang made a speech after that. He expressed that this year is the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations and that he truly hopes that more and more people in China will be interested in and support the United Nations. To achieve the goal, the U.N. Association of China is also trying to carry out more measures such as making videos and publishing books or pamphlets to attract and educate high school students.
As the academic supporter for the conference, Wang Yiming said that the United Nations is the most powerful international organization today and it makes all nations closer. With new and difficult problems in international relations, more and more issues need to be solved by international organizations and in an international framework. It marks the progress of human beings’ history and is the remarkable milestone of the new era.
To show their warm welcome, Wang Yiming and Du Jinyu, the secretary-general also gave short speeches. Shortly after, Du Jinyu announced the commencement of the conference.
