PKU Delegation Visits Partner Institutions in UK, Germany and France

On June 16th to 23th, 2014, a delegation led by President Wang Enge visited Partner Universities and Institutions in UK, Germany and France. The delegation went to visit University College of London (UCL), London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Cambridge University, Oxford University, Rhodes Foundation, Humboldt Universitat, Free University of Berlin, ParisTech and Ecole Normale Super Paris, and attended activities organized by local alumni associations.

On the morning of June 16th, President of PKU Wang Enge visited University College of London. Prof. Michael Arthur, President and Provost of University College of London (UCL), Vice President Dame Nicola, Prof. Guo Zhengxiao, Vice President of UCL, received the delegation. Both sides reviewed the achievements of cooperation and explored the possibility of further cooperation. UCL plans to use the venue of 2012 London Olympic Games to build a new campus, and expected to continue cooperation with PKU in constructing the new model of the combining of production, teaching and research. Besides, both sides reached consensus on joint education of doctoral students and exchanges of faculty members and students.

On the afternoon of June 16th, PKU delegation went to London School of Economics and Political Science. As one of PKU’s most important partners in the UK, LSE-PKU summer school and double degree program for masters have received sound effect. Craig Calhoun, President of LSE, and professors from the fields of law, economics, literature and philosophy attended the meeting. Both sides agreed to carry out cooperation in the aspects of discipline construction, reform of medical teaching system and model, and the development of online courses.

On June 17th, President Wang Enge visited Cambridge University, and met with Knight Leszek Borysiewicz, President of Cambridge University. Leszek Borysiewicz said that while current cooperation has gained sound development, both universities have common interest in the areas of medicine and student nourishment. Delegates of PKU explored the scholarship system of international students, pattern of talents training in universities and school-run enterprises with their counterparts in Cambridge University.

In the afternoon, an in-person event was organized between the PKU delegation and PKU alumni in the UK. President Wang Enge talked about the development of PKU with about 70 PKU alumni and encouraged them to make their contributions to the development of China and the mankind.

During June 18th to 19th, the delegation visited Oxford University. Professors form Martin School, the Department of Philosophy, and medical big data research area communicated with PKU delegates about respective research development and reached cooperation intent. What’s more, PKU delegation also went on a site visit to Hertford College and Magdalen College, which offered the delegates an in-depth understanding about management and operating model of residential colleges.

During his stay at Oxford University, President Wang Enge also visited Sir John Hood, President of Rhodes Foundation. Both sides reached cooperation intents on joint training of international talents, and deeper collaboration of Yenchig Academy in particular.

After the visit to the UK ended, the delegation arrived at Berlin and paid a visit to Humboldt Universitat and Free University of Berlin.  President Wang Enge signed the Agreement on the Establishment of Peking University- Humboldt Universitat- Free University of Berlin Institute of Advanced Humanities and Social Sciences, with Jan-Hendrik Olbertz, President of Humboldt Universitat, and Peter-André Alt, President of Free University of Berlin. This agreement aims to apply funds from both Chinese and German governments for the purpose of setting up the Institute at PKU and supporting communication among prestigious scholars of the two countries.

On June 23rd, the delegation visited ParisTech and Ecole Normale Super Paris. President Wang reached consensus with Jean-PhilippeVanot, President of ParisTech, on deepening cooperation of “3+3+1” Joint Education Program in math and skills of student exchanges. Paris Deputy Mayor Marie-Christine Lemardeley attended the exchange activity held between PKU alumni working in all walks of France and Germany, and PKU delegation.

In the afternoon, Prof. Marc Mézard, President of Ecole Normale Super Paris, met the delegation. President Wang Enge noted that PKU and Ecole Normale Super Paris have similar discipline background and philosophy of talent trainning, which constitutes the foundation for further cooperation in student exchanges.

The delegation concluded the European visit and flied back to China on the same day. The visit scored complete success, which deepens communication between PKU and its European strategic partners while actively promoting new cooperation platforms.
