Professor Chorh Chuan Tan, President of National University of Singapore visited Peking University on May 5th, 2014 to attend the International Forum on the Nourishment of Innovative Talents and the launching ceremony of Yenching Academy held at Yingjie Exchange Centre.

Professor Wang Enge, President of Peking University, held talks with Professor Chorh Chuan Tan at Linhuxuan in the following day.

Professor Wang first warmly welcomed Professor Chorh Chuan Tan’s arrival, and mentioned that the speech professor Chorh gave on the forum in which he discussed about talent introduction is highly relevant. During the meeting, professor Wang pointed out that PKU still has great disparity in the appointment standards and the salaries offered for professors. Besides, the implement of the Thousand Talents Program is facing some difficulties, given historical reasons and labor cost. However, with the development of China’s economy, more professors and researchers choose to come back to China, which makes PKU’s talent advantages over its counterparts in China become obvious. So far more than 40 renowned scholars have come back to serve in PKU through the Thousand Talents Program and the number is still rising.

Professor Chorh shared his experience in the management of faculty and staff. He introduced the professor evaluating system, in which professors will be assessed from 3 different dimensions, namely teaching, researching, and servicing achievement. Professor Chorh also expected supervisors of relevant departments of PKU to come to NUS for communication in this aspect.

Professor Wang and professor Chorh then reached an agreement on promoting the development of MOOC in Asia. There are several Chinese speaking countries in Asia and other countries are having increasing interest in Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture. PKU and NUS, together with other top universities in Asia, will make efforts to offer free online courses in Chinese.
