On the morning of May 9th, Mr. Paul Steinmetz, Luxemburg’s Ambassador to China, visited Peking University (PKU).Vice President of PKU Li Yansong received the guest at Linhuxuan. Both sides compared notes on the position of universities, future development trends and cooperation between universities in Luxemburg and their Chinese counterparts. After the meeting, Mr. Paul Steinmetz delivered a speech on the topic ofLuxembourg City— Ancient Capital of Luxemburg and discussed with Chinese students.

During the meeting, Vice President of PKU Li Yansong extended his warm welcome for the arrival of Mr. Paul Steinmetz and gave a detailed introduction of Yenching Academy, a project aiming at international talents nourishment to be launched by PKU. Mr. Li Yansong said that PKU placed great emphasis on international exchanges and cooperation with research universities around the world through attracting more outstanding overseas students to study at PKU and encouraging more PKU students to learn in other countries.
Then, Ambassador Paul Steinmetz talked about the development process and philosophy of universities in Luxemburg. He stressed that government should support research in natural sciences and social sciences of universities. Besides, drawing upon their cultural traditions, universities should stick to their own characters against the tide of internalization.

In his speech, Ambassador Paul Steinmetz talked about the history and cultural traditions of Luxemburg, in which he also elaborated on the phenomenon of multicultural coexistence in Luxemburg. At the Q and A session, PKU students interacted actively with Mr. Paul Steinmetz and asked such questions that they are most interested in as how to apply for some exchanges programs to study in Luxemburg, cultural coexistence and international cooperative experience.
