On the afternoon of March 21st, 2014, Mr. Peter Grauer, Chairman of the Board of Bloomberg L.P., which is a world leader in providing business and financial information, visited Peking University (PKU) and delivered a speech in Guanghua School of Management entitled “How to be a Leader”. Vice president of PKU Li Yansong met Mr. Peter Grauer at Lin Huxuan, accompanied by Gu Xue, Executive Vice Secretary-General of Beijing Forum, Ma Li, Assistant Dean of Guanghua School of Management and faculty of Career Development Center.
Peter Grauer, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Bloomberg L.P., graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1968 with a Bachelor's Degree in English, and Harvard University Graduate School of Business, Program for Management Development in 1975. It was in 1996 that Grauer was asked to become a member of the Bloomberg L.P. board of directors where he was later named Chairman of the Board in 2001, succeeding Michael Bloomberg who is the founder of Bloomberg L.P. and former mayor of New York City.
Vice President of PKU Li Yansong talked about the historical tradition of PKU, its number of students, the proportion of overseas students and various cooperative tides between world renowned universities and PKU, which made Peter Grauer marveled at PKU’s internationalization level. As a member of the school council of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he hoped more collaboration can be conducted with PKU, and more PKU students can join Bloomberg L.P.
After the meeting Peter Grauer delivered a speech in Guanghua School of Management. He believed that one needs to require three key qualities to become a leader, namely the ability to establish close links, modesty and introspection. The reason why he had the chance to become Chairman of the Board is that his daughter had riding lessons with Michael Bloomberg’s daughter. So the two fathers always chatted with each other while waiting for their daughters. “You will never know when you will establish important links,” he said. While the latter two qualities can help people to better move forward. “I’m glad that my employees never think themselves outstanding. But in fact they are really awesome.”
