Applying for a bank card

If you would like to apply for a Chinese bank card, a Union Pay Card is suggested. It is widely used in China and functions as a debit card that enables you to transfer money from your saving/checking account via an ATM machine.

To apply for a bank card, you need to take along your passport, a Chinese phone number, and other documents such as your campus card or work permit, etc. Consult the bank in advance as different banks may have different requirements.

Exchanging Foreign currency

Forforeign currency exchange, the banks in Beijing accept foreign currencies including Pound Sterling, Hong Kong Dollar, American Dollar, Euro, Japanese Yen, Canadian Dollar, Australian Dollar, and perhaps some others.

To exchange CNY into foreign currency, make sure tobring your passport to the bank counter and fill out a form there. There are limitations on the CNY amount you can convert into foreign currency (currently, the limit is an equivalent of USD $5000 per day and USD $50000 per year). You may call the bank customer service and inquire about the relative regulations in advance.
