International Faculty Club Activity “Discovering the Beauty of Chinese History and Culture - A Visit to the Ancient Capital of Nanjing”

The Peking University International Faculty Club recently organized an event themed "Discovering the Beauty of Chinese History and Culture - A Visit to the Ancient Capital of Nanjing." Twenty international faculty members from thirteen schools and departments participated in the event to gain a comprehensive understanding of the city's extensive history and distinctive culture.


Nanjing, known as "Jinling" and "Jiankang" in ancient times, is renowned as the “ancient capital of the Six Dynasties” or “the capital of the Ten Dynasties”, boasting a rich cultural legacy and unique natural landscape, and is a well-known historical and cultural city in China. Throughout the three-day trip, the international faculty were able to immerse themselves in Nanjing's rich cultural heritage and experience the vibrant modern city through visits to Nanjing University.


Dai Zhehua, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges of Nanjing University, warmly welcomed the international faculty from Peking University, and delivered a detailed introduction to the history and development of international exchanges at Nanjing University. The international faculty from both universities engaged in discussions on topics such as work, life, and cross-cultural exchange in China, and made plans to strengthen communication, cooperation, and mutual visits in the future.


During visits to Niushou Mountain and Nanshan Zhuhai, the international faculty developed a strong interest in Buddhist culture and bamboo culture and their significance in Chinese society. At the Nanjing Imperial Examination Museum, they gained an appreciation for the depth and complexity of the ancient Chinese imperial examination system, and its impact on the civil service system in China. The blend of history and modernity in the Jinling Town and along the banks of the Qinhuai River showcased the unique charm of the ancient capital of Nanjing, which is not only rich in historical heritage, but also full of vitality.The international faculty also visited the Pearl S. Buck Memorial Hall, where they learned about Pearl S. Buck's life, literary works, and her story with China through various photos and historical relics.



This visit to Nanjing left a lasting impression on our international faculty, who not only admired the charm of the ancient capital and the profound Chinese history and culture, but also fostered exchanges and communication, formed genuine friendships.
