International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Workshop on Collaborative Technology Transfer Hosted at Peking University

From March 7th to 8th, 2013, the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Workshop on Collaborative Technology Transfer was held at Peking University (PKU) by the PKU School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The Workshop attracted experts from UC Berkeley, Copenhagen University, ETH Zurich, National University of Singapore, Australian National University, Peking University, and University of New South Wales as well as the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. Professor Wang Enge, then Executive Vice President and Provost of Peking University, delivered welcome remarks to at the meeting. Professor Chen Dongmin, Dean of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Xia Hongwei, Director of the Office of International Relations, and Professor Wu Changqi from the Guanghua School of Management gave speeches on behalf of Peking University.

With the development of knowledge economy and globalization, technology transfer, patent licensing and entrepreneurship talent training among universities have become of great importance. Academic institutions shall play a role in their promotion to impact today’s world economic development. The purpose of the AIRU workshop is to explore effective collaboration on technology transfer and patent licensing as well as to share the best practices on innovative enterprises and talents cultivation among member universities.
 

Professor Chen Dongmin gave a speech titled “University’s Role in Accelerating Nation’s Innovation System Development in China,” in which he talked about the cooperation of the university, industry and government. He pointed out the deficiency in technology transfer in universities, introduced the new collaborative model adpted by Peking University, industries and the government, and outlined the opportunities and challenges in the field of technology transfer and incubation in China. Experts from different universities and institutions also exchanged and shared their own development model and experience in patent licensing. On behalf of Peking University, Prof. Chen Dongmin proposed to establish collaborative IP licensing and joint training programs on entrepreneurship talent cultivation. The participants spoke highly of the proposal and discussed the possibility for cooperation.

It was the first time that Peking University hosted an IARU academic workshop. It promoted mutual understanding among member universities and boosted multilateral cooperation on technology transfer.
