All for PKU: Peking University Open Day

2014-05-03 14:51:00

With China’s National College Entrance Examination just around the corner, parents and students are eagerly seeking for specific information about enrollment into various universities. With this in mind, the Peking University Open Day was held on April 20th, 2014, to provide advice from admissions officers and current students to these prospective students. The PKU Open Day is well recognized in China, and other renowned universities also participate as well. The highlight of the open day, however, is the compelling exhibition stands put up by various faculties and departments at PKU.

The large poster put up by the EECS (the School of Electronics and Computer Science) successfully captivated visitors. The EECS also provided a rare opportunity for the audience when they opened up their laboratories for visiting, providing them with a glimpse of the facilities and teaching apparatus. China’s booming economy and finance industry also attracted people to the stand of Guanghua School of Management and the School of Economics, with students at both booths using their professional knowledge to illustrate their competitive advantage and board range of their majors. Apart from that the two schools, the National School of Development is also a popular booth among the visitors since it offers dual degree in Economics.

Apart from the booths, the attire of the volunteers also converges into a beautiful landscape. The volunteers for the open day wore different attire based on their faculty. Highlights include the environmental-friendly green vest which displays the professional spirit of students from the School of Physics, while the value of kindness is expressed perfectly by the Chinese students’ hoodies.

The SJC (School of Journalism and Communication) stand comes into view when visitors reach the entrance. Volunteers have already arrived at their exhibition stand before 8 o’clock. After a brief preparation, they all set the ball in motion. Team leader Yang Ruolan, a sophomore from SJC, tells me that the team members gather at their own school at 7:30am, and carry all the materials here. At the stand, 1000 copies of leaflets with basic information printed are prepared as well as brochures describing journalism study and stories of those famous professors. When it comes to the arrangement of voluntary work, three groups cover time period from 8:30 am to 14:00 pm. “They are so enthusiastic! “said Yang, “Some are reluctant to leave the position when the transition time comes”. According to Yang, questions raised vary among the crowd, some parents are concerned about the scores, and others focus on development of graduates. Nothing beats the well-trained volunteers, for they have done much homework to those questions.

It is worthy to mentioning, the special stand of Peking University OIR (Office of International Relations) offers information of exchange programs. Collaboration and Communication, a magazine edited by students from OIR press team, are distributed for a better understanding of the global perspective of PKU. Passionate service and elaborately designed red T-shirts of the volunteers are unforgettable as well.

It is a day illustrating all for all.
