Short PhD fellowships for Chinese students

In accordance with the Utrecht University (UU) strategic plan 2005-2009, the UU Board is strengthening the academic ties with China. As part of this plan a budget is made available in 2007 for 18 Chinese PhD students to visit Utrecht University for a maximum of 3 months. The purpose of this visit is to become familiar with UU and the wide range of research possibilities it offers to (foreign) PhD students. In addition, depending on the aptitude of the candidate, he or she can pursue a follow-up for a longer stay at UU. Chinese students in all disciplines conducting research at UU preferred partners in China are considered eligible candidates. Applications for PhD students who are not registered at one of the UU preferred partners in China are also welcome, but will not have a priority.

Procedure

Candidates have to be nominated by a UU faculty dean, head of department, or research institute director. For the latter two this letter of nomination should include a written approval by the faculty dean. A letter of acceptance by an appointed UU supervisor of the UU programme in which the candidate will participate should also be included in the nomination. Candidates will be selected by the UU Regional Committee Asia chaired by Prof. dr. Peter van der Veer.

The application should include the following information of the candidate

- Curriculum vitae (in English);
- Proof of required English skills*;
- Letter of recommendation and approval of a detailed plan of the suggested research in Utrecht by home university faculty dean, head of department, or research institute director;
- Short abstract of the planned research in Utrecht;
- Time schedule of the planned visit to Utrecht.

* IELTS: 6.5 (average) with a minimum of 6.0 for the writing section.
TOEFL: 237 for the computer test; 580 for the written test; 93 for the internet test.


Selected candidates are offered an (economy class) return ticket Beijing – Amsterdam (to a maximum of €1100), visa reimbursement, accommodation in Utrecht, a medical and liability insurance, and a monthly allowance of €1150.
